What to see and do in Cape Town?

Having travelled extensively across the city, our South Africa travel specialists have created a list of their five favourite things to see and do on a luxury holiday to Cape Town.

Take a boat ride to Robben Island

With a short boat ride off the coast of Cape Town, you can explore the historical Robben Island, a place where Nelson Mandela spent a large part of his 27-year incarceration. With a tour of the island, you will be able to learn more about the prison and the stories the limestone quarry holds.

Reach the summit of Table Mountain

Table Mountain, one of the most notorious sites in South Africa and one of the new seven wonders of the natural world, lies in Cape Town. You can either climb the mountain on foot or hop on a cable-car ride to reach the top of the mountain and witness some of the most spectacular views of the bustling city below and Robben Island beyond.

Make the trip to Cape Peninsula

The Cape Peninsula is an adventure playground full of unique wildlife, rich history and natural beauty. With a tailor-made holiday to Cape Town, you can embark on a self-drive tour along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most spectacular coastal adventures. From Noordhoek Beach, a magnificent 5km stretch of beach which is ideal for surfing and horseback riding, you will journey south along the western coast to see the scenic cliffs of Cape Point and the extraordinary wildlife of Cape Point Nature Reserve before travelling up the eastern border to observe the endangered African penguins of Boulders Beach and enjoy some deliciously fresh seafood at one of the many coastal restaurants in Simon’s Town.

Go surfing in Muizenberg

Only a half an hour drive from the city lies the seaside village of Muizenberg. Hidden on the coastline of Cape Town, Muizenberg is a long stretch of beach decorated with technicolour beach huts and renowned for its forgiving waves, which are ideal if you are a casual surfer or a beginner.

Visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Acclaimed as one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world, Kirstenbosch is home to more than 7,000 of South Africa’s plant species, including the famous fynbos synonymous with South Africa’s Cape region. Here you can walk among the trees on the infamous Tree Canopy Walkway, overlooking the mountain scenery beyond and the grandeur of the colourful gardens below.
